Using the Learnerbly agent: find and request learning

Chat with Learnerbly's AI agent in the web app to find learning from your organisation's catalogue and request it without leaving the chat.

The Learnerbly agent is an AI learning assistant built into the Learnerbly web app.

Describe what you want to learn in plain language and it recommends resources from your organisation's Learnerbly catalogue and lets you request them without leaving the chat. Tell it where you want to get to, and it interviews you and builds a personalised learning pathway towards a new role or a new skill: see Learning pathways: plan your route with the Learnerbly agent.

It is the same agent that answers you in Slack, so wherever you talk to it, it already knows your role, the formats you prefer, your remaining budget and what you have learned before.

Start a conversation

Open the Home page of the Learnerbly web app. Under "Spark something. What do you want to learn?" you will find the chat box, a few suggested prompts, and, once you have one, your open pathways.

  • Type what you are after and press Enter to send (Shift+Enter adds a new line).

  • Or pick a suggested prompt. The two marked New start a pathway. The others are starting points for finding learning, and after your first conversation they are based on what you asked for last time.

  • Attach a file with the + button, by dragging it onto the chat box, or by pasting a long piece of text. This is how you share your CV when planning a pathway: see Bring your CV or your LinkedIn profile.

Every reply streams in as it is written, and you can keep going in the same conversation with the "Ask a follow-up…" box. The conversation stays where it is when you leave the page: come back to Home and you can carry on. Press Start over at the top to begin a fresh one. Starting over saves a short note of what you were looking for, which is what makes your next suggested prompts personal.

Every reply has 👍 and 👎 buttons. Please use them: that feedback is exactly what we use to improve the agent, and it takes a second.

Find and request learning

What to ask

Talk to it the way you would talk to a colleague. Describing the problem usually works better than naming a product.

  • I want to get better at public speaking

  • I have just been promoted to manager and I am struggling with difficult conversations

  • Recommend a short course on financial modelling I can finish in a weekend

  • Show me what Coursera has on data visualisation

  • What can I get with my remaining budget?

If your question is broad, the agent shows a first set of results and asks one short question to narrow it down. If it is very broad ("help me grow"), it asks first.

What comes back

You get a two or three sentence summary and a set of cards, one per resource, showing its format, title and supplier. Use the format chips above the cards to filter them, and the bookmark icon to save one for later.

Click a card to open it inside the chat: you see the full description, a View full details link to the resource page, and Request this.

Keep refining in the same conversation: cheaper options, books only, something shorter, show me more. What you ask for sticks until you change it, so after "books only" every later search stays on books until you say otherwise. Under each set of results, "Were these results relevant?" with Yes and No tells us how well the search did.

Request learning without leaving the chat

Click Request this on a resource and the request opens right there, in four short steps. If your organisation does not have in-chat requests yet, Request this opens the resource page instead, where you request it as usual.

  1. Choose an option. If the resource comes in more than one form (paperback or eBook, different course dates, subscription lengths), pick the one you want. You see the price of each option.

  2. Details. Tell us why you are requesting it, confirm your delivery address (pre-filled from your profile, and only used for physical items), choose whether to show the request to others, and, for some suppliers, agree to share your contact details with them.

  3. Review. Check the summary.

  4. Confirm request. Nothing is submitted until you press this. You then see "Request submitted successfully!" and the agent picks the conversation back up.

Requests made in the chat are ordinary Learnerbly requests. They appear in your requests list, go to your usual approver and are fulfilled in exactly the same way. Free resources such as articles, podcasts and videos do not need a request: open them straight from the card. You can read more in How to make a request.

Plan a learning pathway

Tell the agent where you want to get to, or pick Plan my route to a new role or Build a skill step by step on the Home page, and it hands the conversation over to its planning side: a short interview, a brief that reflects back what it understood, and a pathway of resources and exercises sized to your time and budget, which you then follow and change step by step. A small line appears in the chat when that happens: "Planning your pathway from here · you can carry on in your pathway later". Ask about something unrelated, such as a book on a different topic, and the conversation comes back to finding learning just as quietly.

Everything about pathways, from the interview to changing steps, re-planning and bringing your CV or LinkedIn profile, is in Learning pathways: plan your route with the Learnerbly agent.

Not seeing learning pathways?

Learning pathways are being switched on organisation by organisation. If your Home page does not show the Plan my route to a new role and Build a skill step by step prompts, or the + button for attaching files, your organisation does not have them yet. The agent finds and requests learning as described above in the meantime, and you can ask us through the chat if you would like to know more.

What the agent knows about you, and what it can and cannot do

To personalise what it suggests, the agent reads from your Learnerbly profile: your name, job title and job family, the formats you chose at sign-up, your learning interests, the resources you have already requested (so it never suggests them again), your remaining budget, and, if you have shared one, the skills from your CV. Where your organisation hides budget amounts from learners, the agent never mentions money.

It can

It cannot

Recommend resources from your organisation's Learnerbly catalogue, and build pathways only from them

Recommend anything outside the catalogue. It never invents resources, prices or suppliers

Take your role, budget, preferences and learning history into account automatically

Change your profile, your budget or your organisation's rules

Open a request for you, tell you whether approval is needed, and show your remaining budget (unless your organisation hides it)

Approve or decline requests, or raise an external expense. Requests follow your normal approval route

Interview you, build a pathway, change its steps and re-plan it, always with your confirmation

Promise a job or a role. A pathway is a plan for learning, and it is honest about what fits in the time you have

Read a CV, LinkedIn profile or other document you attach, in that conversation

Connect to LinkedIn or any other account, or share your conversation with your manager or colleagues

Troubleshooting

"I couldn't find anything for that"

The agent only recommends what is in your catalogue, so a very narrow or unusual request may come back empty. Try describing the skill or the problem rather than naming a product. If the resource you want genuinely is not on Learnerbly, you can still ask us to add it.

The agent replies in another language

The agent answers in the language you write in, and if you attach a document written in another language it may follow the document. Just ask it to carry on in English (or any language you prefer) and it will.

A file will not attach, or a pathway is not building

File limits, upload errors and everything about building and re-planning a pathway are covered in the troubleshooting section of the pathways article.

I do not see the pathway prompts

Learning pathways are not switched on for your organisation yet. See Not seeing learning pathways? above.

Tell us how it did: the 👍 and 👎 under every reply go straight to the team, and Feedback in the footer of the web app is always open.
